Russian Comfrey Crowns (Symphytum × uplandicum)

Russian comfrey is a highly valuable perennial for food forests, orchards, and organic garden systems. Known for its vigorous growth, deep root system, and ability to accumulate nutrients, it is widely used as a dynamic accumulator, compost ingredient, mulch plant, and natural garden fertiliser.

This hardy, low-maintenance plant produces abundant foliage that can be repeatedly harvested throughout the growing season and returned to the soil to support healthy plant growth. Once established, it forms a productive clump that returns year after year.

Each order includes 1 strong crown cutting with a growing tip. Plant directly into your garden over winter and it will emerge strongly in spring. Growing instructions and uses can be found below.

Growing Conditions

Comfrey is highly adaptable and will grow well in a wide range of conditions. It performs best in moist, well-drained, fertile soil but will also tolerate partial shade and full sun. Once established, it is extremely vigorous and difficult to remove due to its deep and resilient root system. While it does not spread by seed, even small root fragments left in the soil can regenerate, making placement an important consideration.
Rather than relocating beds every few years, we continually build fertility in place by adding compost and organic matter to support ongoing harvests.

Planting

Comfrey is a valuable addition to food forest systems, where it serves both medicinal and ecological roles, including compost enrichment and animal fodder.
It is highly nutritious and rich in minerals, and is readily eaten by animals such as chickens and dairy livestock. Many growers place comfrey near compost systems or animal enclosures to cycle nutrients efficiently. Space plants approximately 20–30 cm apart to allow for strong crown development.

Uses

Russian comfrey is one of the most valuable multifunctional plants for a regenerative garden, food forest, or permaculture system. It is often grown not only for its traditional herbal uses but also as a powerful soil-building and nutrient-cycling plant.

Dynamic nutrient accumulator

Comfrey has a deep and extensive root system that allows it to access minerals from deeper layers of the soil and accumulate them in its leaves. When the foliage is cut and returned to the garden, these nutrients are gradually released as the leaves break down, making them available to surrounding plants. Comfrey is especially valued as a natural source of potassium, which supports flowering, fruiting, and root development; nitrogen, which encourages healthy leafy growth; and calcium and other minerals that contribute to overall soil fertility and plant health.

Living mulch around fruit trees

Comfrey is traditionally planted around fruit trees, berries, and other perennial crops. Its large leaves create a living ground cover that shades the soil, reduces evaporation, suppresses weeds, and adds organic matter when cut back. A common practice is to plant comfrey around the drip line of fruit trees and cut it several times a year, leaving the leaves on the ground as a nutrient-rich mulch.

Compost activator

Russian comfrey leaves are an excellent addition to the compost heap, providing a rich source of nutrients and helping to create high-quality compost. Fresh leaves can be added directly as a green compost ingredient, where they break down quickly and contribute valuable minerals and organic matter. They can also be layered between carbon-rich materials such as straw, autumn leaves, or wood chips to help balance the composting process. Another option is to use comfrey leaves to make a nutrient-rich compost extract, which can be applied around plants as a natural garden fertiliser.

Liquid fertiliser

Comfrey leaves can be steeped in water to create a powerful natural plant feed. The resulting liquid is particularly useful for heavy-feeding plants such as tomatoes, pumpkins, cucumbers, fruiting vegetables, and fruit trees. A simple method is to fill a bucket with comfrey leaves, weigh them down, cover with water, and allow them to ferment for several weeks. The resulting liquid can be diluted and applied around plants.

Chop-and-drop mulch

Comfrey is one of the best plants for chop-and-drop gardening systems. It regrows quickly after cutting, often producing several harvests of leaves each season. The cut foliage can simply be laid around plants where it breaks down and feeds the soil.

Pollinator plant

The beautiful purple, pink, or blue bell-shaped flowers are highly attractive to bees and other pollinating insects. Allowing some plants to flower creates valuable habitat and biodiversity in the garden.

Weed suppression and soil improvement

Once established, Russian comfrey forms a dense clump that helps cover bare soil and compete with weeds. Its large leaves protect the soil surface, while its roots improve soil structure and support a healthy underground ecosystem.

Animal feed and farm uses

Comfrey has traditionally been used as a supplementary fodder plant for livestock, although it is generally best offered in moderation and alongside a balanced diet. The leaves are also useful as a nutrient-rich addition to worm farms and compost systems.

Choosing Russian comfrey

Russian comfrey (Symphytum × uplandicum) is often preferred in gardens because it is usually sterile and does not produce viable seed, meaning it spreads mainly by root division rather than taking over through self-seeding. Once planted, it can remain productive in the same location for decades with minimal care.

Healthy Vigorous Seedlings

I bought this comfrey a few months ago and it has since sprouted several large leaves and already put out a runner with a second plant on it. I am very pleased as some shoots I bought elsewhere last season failed to grow at all. I am looking forward to being able to harvest leaves for the garden.

Evergreen Dwarf Comfrey (Symphytum grandiflorum)
Family: Boraginaceae
Common names: Dwarf Comfrey, Creeping Comfrey

Evergreen Dwarf Comfrey is a low-growing, spreading perennial valued for its lush evergreen foliage, early nectar-rich flowers, and exceptional usefulness as a living mulch and groundcover. Unlike Medicinal Comfrey, this smaller species is primarily grown for its ecological and soil-building benefits, helping to suppress weeds, protect soil, and feed beneficial insects. Hardy, resilient, and easy to grow, it is an excellent addition to food forests, orchards, and regenerative gardens.
Due to its smaller size and more compact growth than regular comfrey it is ideal for smaller gardens, urban environments and small food forests. It makes an excellent border plant and ground cover and does well planted around fruit trees.

White Ginger (Hedychium coronarium)
Family: Zingiberaceae

White Ginger, also known as Butterfly Ginger or Himalayan Ginger, is a striking perennial from the ginger family grown for its lush tropical foliage and highly fragrant white flowers. The blooms resemble delicate butterflies in flight and release a rich, sweet perfume often compared to gardenias, making it one of the most aromatic ornamental gingers.

Despite sometimes being mislabelled in trade (including in New Zealand), White Ginger is distinct from culinary galangal species. While its rhizomes are edible and carry a mild, ginger-like flavour, it is primarily grown as an ornamental and fragrant garden plant.

This vigorous plant produces large clumps of upright stems and spreads gradually via underground rhizomes, forming a bold, tropical presence in the garden. It thrives in moist to boggy soils and performs best in full sun to partial shade, especially where soil moisture is consistently high.

Your order includes one healthy plant, ready to establish and grow into a lush flowering clump. Growing instructions and care details are provided below.

Sorrel plant

Add to cart

Sorrel (Rumex acetosa)
Family: Polygonaceae

Common names: Sorrel, Garden Sorrel, Lemon Sorrel

Sorrel is a hardy, long-lived perennial vegetable prized for its vibrant green leaves and distinctive fresh, lemony flavour. One of the first edible greens to emerge in spring, it provides an abundant harvest over many months and is delicious in salads, soups, sauces, omelettes, quiches, and pesto. Easy to grow and remarkably productive, Sorrel quickly forms generous clumps that can be divided every few years to create new plants.

Your Sorrel is supplied as a dormant root division during winter, with little or no foliage visible at the time of purchase. Simply plant it into the garden or a pot, and as the soil warms in spring it will send up vigorous new shoots.

During the first season, harvest lightly to allow the plant to establish a strong root system, and remove flower stalks as they appear to encourage continuous leaf production. After around a year, the clump can be lifted and divided to propagate additional plants and keep it growing vigorously for many years.
