These turmeric have been grown in Canterbury for a decade and we have been grown them for a few years at KoruKai Herb Farm on Banks Peninsula. They can be grown in the South Island if you have a frost-free, warm spot for them.
They can be grown in a pot indoors and make a beautiful and useful houseplant.

The below photo shows a selection of crowns that we will ship. Order is for one crown. The top will die down and new shoots will grow in spring.

Growing Instructions

Plants need full sun and warm, humid conditions to do well. We grow them in a glasshouse at KoruKai Herb Farm in our South Island climate and they get misted with automatic irrigation once a day over the summer period. We used to grow them in a tunnel house, but they never thrived as much as they do in the warmer glass house. In the North Island they may be OK without a glasshouse, but please do your own research as we can only share how we grow them (Banks Peninsula, mid South Island).
Plant into rich, friable soil when you receive them and make sure they do not dry out, but refrain from watering them in winter to prevent rotting. Mulch well to keep the moisture in the ground. Mark the spot well so you know where you have planted it. Once it is growing its shoots in spring, keep it well watered.
Harvest the turmeric when the tops die down in winter and replant the crown. The crown may have multiple shoots and may be split after one year for replanting.
