  • Seeds & Bulbs

Growing offerings of seeds, bulbs, as well as tubers and rhizomes grown and collected from KoruKai Herb Farm, Banks Peninsula.

Grown in biological, organic, alive soil, chemical-free, synthetic fertiliser-free, herbicide-free.

  • Plants

Plants are sold and shipped during their winter dormancy from July until mid-September. This allows us to ship them bare-rooted, and the transplanting success rate is significantly higher than sending pots with soil in mid-summer and transplanting seedlings during their growing period.

You can sign up for the waiting list under each plant. You will then receive an email once they are back in stock.

Plants are grown spray-free, free from chemicals, herbicides, pesticides and fungicides. We are a biological farm that enhances soil life and works in harmony with natural cycles.

  • Composting Equipment

At KoruKai Herb Farm, we produce 6-8 tonnes of compost and 10 tonnes of vermicast per year, so we know what tools are necessary and handy to have on hand.

We offer them here so you can make great compost and vermicast as well. Join us at our online compost-making class and get our comprehensive worm-farming guide.

Compost Thermometer

$29.90

A compost thermometer is an essential tool for successful hot composting and worm farming, whether in a home garden or commercial setup.

It provides a clear indication of microbial activity inside your compost pile, helping you determine when to turn it and whether your carbon-to-nitrogen balance is working correctly. Temperature readings quickly show if your mix contains too many “greens” (too hot), too many “browns” (too cold), or insufficient moisture (low microbial activity).

Without temperature monitoring, composting becomes guesswork—this tool allows you to refine your process and consistently produce high-quality compost over time.

Made from stainless steel with a long probe designed to reach deep into compost piles and soil.

Length: 50 cm

Worm Farming Guide

$24.90

This amazing guide brings together what we have learnt, observed and experienced over the last 12 years of managing several worm farms to get amazing worm castings for our farm and vegetable gardens.

In this guide, with 70 pages, you will learn how to turn food scraps and farm waste into rich compost and fertiliser to regenerate soil and bring back life force to the below ground livestock - the microbes. This turns on nutrient cycling, grows resilient and healthy plants and increases the water holding capacity of soil - a necessity with droughts and flooding that go hand in hand nowadays.

Healthy soil is the backbone of health - be it environmental, animal, plant or human health. It's our foundation and the solution to a lot of our problems.

Skirret (Sium sisarum)

Skirret was a reasonably well known plant in Europe from the middle ages into the 19th century. It has names in many different European languages and most of them appear to translate into some variation of “sugar root”. It can be prepared similarly to carrots. We love it simply fried in some butter. It is sweeter than carrots and beautifully creamy and soft when cooked.

You will receive a seedling with some storage roots and shoots (see image further below). Simply plant into your garden as soon as you receive it and watch it emerge in spring. Growing tips are below.

Composting Worms for Worm Farms

$45.90
Add to cart

Worms will be available again in August. During the wet and cold winter months, separating the worms from the castings becomes too unpleasant. Sign up below to get an email once they are back in stock.

Composting worms turn food scraps and garden waste into rich, nutrient-dense vermicast—helping regenerate soil, support beneficial microbes, and improve nutrient cycling. This creates healthier, more resilient plants and increases soil water-holding capacity, an important benefit in times of drought and heavy rainfall.

You will receive 250g (approx. 1,000 worms) or 500g (approx. 2,000 worms), supplied with moist bedding in a breathable perforated bag. Worms arrive in a mix of ages and sizes and will quickly breed and multiply under suitable conditions.

Chinese Artichokes / Crosnes

Stachys affinis

The tubers have a distinct shape and look a bit like a grub. When eaten raw they are crisp and sweet like a water chestnut. When fried they are more starchy, soft and sweet, resembling a slightly nutty potato or kumara. In France they are known as crosnes and are typically served braised in herbs and butter, which is our preferred way to eat them. They are a great brain food.

Order is for a starter bag of about 5 tubers.

Growing instructions can be found below. Frost tolerant as they go dormant over winter.
