The TeaLAB Extract Bag is a professional-grade tool designed for producing high-quality compost extract and vermicast extract at home or on-farm scale. Constructed from 400 micron nylon mesh with climbing-grade binding, this bag is engineered for strength, durability, and repeated heavy use.
Each bag is hand stitched in Seattle, USA, by a specialist cut-and-sew workshop known for producing high-performance backpacking gear. This level of craftsmanship ensures a long-lasting tool that can withstand repeated loading, agitation, and brewing cycles without breaking down.
The fine mesh allows beneficial microorganisms and soluble nutrients to move into solution while keeping coarse material contained, making it ideal for brewing biological extracts that can be applied directly to soil or foliage.
The included carabiner clip allows the bag to be easily suspended in a compost tea brewer, ensuring consistent flow and aeration during extraction.
At KoruKai Herb Farm, we use extract systems like this to activate and multiply microbial life from our own compost and vermicast, helping to inoculate soil and support plant health at scale.
Sizes
Small Extract Bag: 23 cm × 36 cm (approx. 20 litres extract)
Large Extract Bag: 51 cm × 56 cm (approx. 60–200 litres extract)
For larger batches (e.g. 1000L), compost can be refreshed 3–5 times, diluted, and reused in the brewer
Special Features
Strong, durable nylon fabric with climbing-grade binding
400 micron mesh—ideal size for compost extract, allowing bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and nematodes to pass through
Includes lanyard and carabiner for easy hanging in extract or tea brewers
Built for long-term use and durability
How to use
Fill the Extract Bag about one-third full with high-quality compost or vermicast. Roll the top down 3–4 times and secure the buckle. Suspend the bag in a bucket (approximately 20L) filled halfway with unchlorinated water.
Gently rub and agitate the bag in the water to release microbial life and soluble nutrients into solution, creating a rich compost extract. For a stronger brew, repeat the process using fresh compost in the same water or a new batch.
Once ready, dilute and apply as a soil drench or foliar spray over your garden or crops. Optional additions such as fish hydrolysate or liquid seaweed extract can be included just before application to further enhance plant and soil response.
At KoruKai Herb Farm, we consider compost extract to be a more reliable and cost-effective approach than traditional aerated compost tea systems. Extracts maintain a broader microbial diversity and are simpler to produce at scale using only a bucket and an extract bag. This avoids the complexity of maintaining strict aerobic conditions required in compost tea brewing, which can be difficult without specialised equipment and microscopy skills.
However, if you do wish to make compost tea, these bags are also well suited for that purpose.
We recommend familiarising yourself with the process before use. The TeaLAB USA website provides helpful videos and additional guidance.
Please refer to the video below for instructions on how to use, clean, and apply your compost extract.
A compost thermometer is an essential tool for successful hot composting and worm farming, whether in a home garden or commercial setup.
It provides a clear indication of microbial activity inside your compost pile, helping you determine when to turn it and whether your carbon-to-nitrogen balance is working correctly. Temperature readings quickly show if your mix contains too many “greens” (too hot), too many “browns” (too cold), or insufficient moisture (low microbial activity).
Without temperature monitoring, composting becomes guesswork—this tool allows you to refine your process and consistently produce high-quality compost over time.
Made from stainless steel with a long probe designed to reach deep into compost piles and soil.
ComposTex Compost Cover (compost fleece) is a breathable, UV-resistant fabric designed to protect compost piles and windrows while still allowing oxygen flow for healthy decomposition. It sheds rain and snow melt while maintaining ideal aerobic conditions.
At KoruKai Herb Farm, we also use it for simple, low-tech worm farming systems directly on the ground.

This amazing guide brings together what we have learnt, observed and experienced over the last 12 years of managing several worm farms to get amazing worm castings for our farm and vegetable gardens.
In this guide, with 70 pages, you will learn how to turn food scraps and farm waste into rich compost and fertiliser to regenerate soil and bring back life force to the below ground livestock - the microbes. This turns on nutrient cycling, grows resilient and healthy plants and increases the water holding capacity of soil - a necessity with droughts and flooding that go hand in hand nowadays.
Healthy soil is the backbone of health - be it environmental, animal, plant or human health. It's our foundation and the solution to a lot of our problems.
This cover crop seeds or green manure seeds mix has been blended to achieve maximum benefit. It can help with common challenges such as compaction, weed pressure, pests and diseases, low fertility, leaching and erosion.
Best sown between August/September and December/January, depending on your climate.
This diverse mix maintains living soil cover in areas that would otherwise be bare. This mix contains seeds from 8 plant families as well as legumes (nitrogen fixing plants), which has been proven in field trials to be very beneficial to build soil structure and to increase beneficial microbes in the soil.
A compost thermometer is a necessary piece of equipment for hot composting and worm farming in a home garden setting and for commercial operators.
It gives you an indication of the microbial activity, telling you when it needs to get turned and indicates if your carbon and nitrogen ratio of your compost materials were adequate. By measuring the temperature you will see if you have added too much green material (gone too hot) or not enough (too cold) and if your moisture level was adequate (not enough moisture, no microbial activity). Without a thermometer you are merely guessing and you cannot improve this valuable skill as a home or commercial gardener.

Best sown between January/February and April/May, depending on your climate. This diverse mix maintains living soil cover in areas that would otherwise be bare over winter. This mix contains seeds from 5 plant families as well as legumes (nitrogen fixing plants), which has been proven in field trials to be very beneficial to build soil structure and to increase beneficial microbes in the soil.

You will receive 250g of composting worms (approx. 1000 worms) or 500g (approx. 2000) with some moist bedding in a perforated bag. The worms come in all ages and sizes, breed and grow fast.
ComposTex Compost Covers (also known as "compost fleece") is a completely breathable, non-woven fabric made of 100% UV-resistant polypropylene that sheds rainfall and snow melt from compost piles and covered windrows while oxygen perforates.
At KoruKai Herb Farm we even use it for a fast to install, low-tech worm farming system straight on the ground.
