Meadow Arnica (Arnica chamissonis)

Creeping alpine herbaceous perennial.

Medicinal Uses*
Arnica improves the local blood supply and speeds healing. It is anti-inflammatory and increases the rate of reabsorption of internal bleeding. It reduces inflammation and pain caused by trauma and overexertion. It is the number one herbs to treat damaged tissue, bruising, sprains, breaks and strains, muscular tension and fatigue. It revives tired and aching muscles after exercise.


Best to use as a homepathic dose internally and make an infused oil with the flowers for external treatment.

German Commission E has determined that this Meadow Arnica is interchangeable with Arnica montana for its antiinflammatory effects. Arnica chamissonis is less elevation dependent than Arnica montana, and yields well from multiple flower stalks.

GROWING INSTRUCTIONS

You will get 3 dormant root pieces. Best to plant in loose, loamy soil, and give a sunny and moist position. Scrape away 3cm of soil and lay the roots in flat as in the below picture. They are creeping plants that are shallow rooted.

Lay them in 5-10cm apart and cover with 3cm of soil and compost mix. Spread a thin layer of mulch over the top. Mark the spot and either add branches over the lot or cover with bird netting to prevent birds from digging around and disturbing the plants. They will emerge between September and November depending on your climate and the warmth of the soil.
This plant will make a carpet of live roots within a couple of years. Highly prolific when happy.

Early days

Purchased arnica in 2021 and I think it's just starting to break dormancy here in the Far North. Roots arrived well packaged and as described. Easy to plant with the online instructions. Fingers crossed it takes off!

Solidago virgaurea

Family: Asteraceae

Common names: Goldenrod, European Goldenrod, Woundwort, true Goldenrod

Goldenrod is a members of the daisy family and has vivid yellow flower heads that are made up of many, small, daisy-like flowers. It was traditionally used to heal wounds, and a yellow dye was produced from the flowers. Its a stunning plant in meadows, wild flower gardens and herb gardens.

Plant is shipped during its winter dormancy. It will be a bare rooted, dormant crown without any leaves or stalks, but with growing buds already in place (see image below). Simply plant into your garden over winter and watch it emerge in spring. Growing tips are below.

Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis)

Mentha suaveolens

Common names: apple mint, woolly mint, fuzzy mint

Apple mint is a delicious compliment to many dishes and is great as a hot herbal tea or iced tea. It’s easy to grow and simple to care for. There’s no question – this species of Mentha definitely deserves a spot in your herb garden.

Elecampane (Inula helenium)

Peppermint (Mentha piperita)

This is a beautiful peppermint with a very "pepperminty" flavour. It is the one we grow commercially and not available in many shops. When we wander through the garden section of hardware stores the pots say "peppermint" on the label, but is more like a garden mint and not the true peppermint that we grow.
We ship it nationwide in their winter dormancy.

Frost tolerant.

They come bare rooted with some growing tips in place.

Small: enough for a 20cm wide planter/pot
Large: enough to fill 1 m2 of garden bed.

Stachys affinis

The tubers have a distinct shape and look a bit like a grub. When eaten raw they are crisp and sweet like a water chestnut. When fried they are more starchy, soft and sweet, resembling a slightly nutty potato or kumara. In France they are known as crosnes and are typically served braised in herbs and butter, which is our preferred way to eat them. They are a great brain food.

Earth Chestnut (Bunium bulbocastanum)


Common names: Earth chestnut, pignut, great pignut and earthnut

The edible parts of the earth chestnut are its tubers, leaves and seeds. The tubers are small, nutty, and taste like chestnuts and can be eaten raw or cooked like potatoes. The leaves are edible and have a parsley-like flavor, while the seeds are also edible and can be used as a cumin substitute.

You will receive a seedling with roots and young shoots (see image further below). Simply plant into your garden as soon as you receive it and watch it emerge in spring. Growing tips are below.

Curcuma longa

Family: Zingiberaceae

Turmeric is one amazing plant with numerous health benefits. Here an extract: "An M.D. Anderson Cancer Centre review of curcumin research, in the journal Phytotherapy Research in 2014, found that it regulates inflammation that "plays a major role in most chronic illnesses, including neurodegenerative, cardiovascular, pulmonary, metabolic, autoimmune and neoplastic diseases."

Zingiber Mioga

Family: Zingiberaceae


Commonly known as Japanese Ginger, Myoga or Mioga.

A beautiful member of the ginger family, with lovely tropical foliage and stunning small flowers that form at the base in late summer / early autumn. The part you harvest is the young flower shoot before it opens. This pink/yellow lovely early flower can be eaten raw, pickled or sautéed to provide a gingery and zesty flavor to any dish.


Order is for 1-2 dormant rhizomes (depending on size) with good, defined growth nodes ready to send up a few strong shoots in spring (see sample image below). We will either send one large or 2-3 smaller ones.

Russian Comfrey (Symphytum x uplandicum)

This plant is very valuable in a food forest and organic garden system.

The roots and leaves have many medicinal uses. It contains high levels of allantoin, making it a powerful cell proliferant internally and externally. It is used to knit wounds and damaged tissue.*

Rumex acetosa

Family: Polygonaceae

Common names: Sorrel, Garden Sorrel, Lemon Sorrel


You will receive a dormant root cutting with no or very little leaves (plant is dormant in winter, see example photo below). It will emerge in spring and grow into a lush plant. Harvest leaves sparingly in the first season so it can establish itself and pinch out any flower stalks. After one year you can dig it up and divide it into several plants.
