Burn Jelly Plant (Bulbine frutescens) is grown organically at KoruKai Herb Farm without the use of pesticides, herbicides, or other agrochemicals.

Plants are shipped bare-rooted by courier on the Monday following your order. Once received, pot them up and water well during the first few weeks while they establish. They can then be planted into their permanent position after approximately 2–3 months.

Burn Jelly Plant is a fast-growing, succulent perennial with fleshy green leaves that form spreading clumps over time. It thrives in sunny, dry conditions and is highly drought tolerant once established, generally requiring very little watering. Its bright yellow flowers attract bees and beneficial insects, making it a beautiful and functional addition to the garden.

Medicinal Uses*

Traditionally valued for its soothing properties, the fresh leaves contain a cooling jelly-like sap that has commonly been applied to burns, rashes, blisters, insect bites, cracked lips, cold sores, mouth ulcers, acne, and dry or cracked skin. It is often kept close at hand as a useful first-aid plant for everyday knocks and scrapes.

Historically, the leaves were also used to prepare herbal infusions for coughs, colds, and arthritis. While this traditional use is well documented, at KoruKai we primarily use the fresh gel externally for bites, stings, and minor burns.

Growing Conditions

Bulbine frutescens is widely used in landscaping where a tough, drought-resistant groundcover is needed. It is easy to grow, low maintenance, and remains attractive year-round with minimal care.

For best results:

 • Plant in full sun or semi-shade
 • Use well-drained soil enriched with compost
 • Remove spent flower heads to encourage ongoing flowering
 • Prune occasionally if plants become untidy
 • Provide maximum light if growing indoors

This versatile plant combines beautifully with other waterwise perennials such as dwarf agapanthus and multiplies readily over time.

Great little grower

We bought our Burn Jelly in 2021, but kept it in a pot the first year. It did well and multiplied up enough that I could divide it after the first year. We planted our divisions into a garden in July 2022, and within 3 months it has begun filling out the space wonderfully, and is flowering. Great, vigorous little plant.

My plant is doing very well. It arrived in good condition and has taken off quite happily.

Plants arrived in good condition

We have planted them in a pot, I see that there is a ‘flower’ appearing on one plant. They aren’t out in the garden yet but they may need a move shortly :)
Packaging was fine and everything arrived in good condition and promptly.

Louisa on Apr 28, 2021

Plants are going really well

They’re going really well – I have one inside in a sunny window, and one outside in a greenhouse. The outside one is definitely bigger, and even ok after the cold weather last night (-1 C).
The shipping in bare root was good, the package was still moist when it arrived so they looked fine.

Happy plant

It arrived very happy and hasn't looked back. It's grown a flower since. Now I've got it in the garden shed away from the frosts!
Thanking you
