Medicinal Uses*

Valerian root is a well-known nervine sedative herb traditionally used to support restful sleep and calm the nervous system. Unlike many narcotic sleep medications, valerian is generally considered non-habit forming. It has also been traditionally used as a mild anxiolytic (to reduce anxiety), antidepressant, and analgesic.

One of the most widely used herbal remedies in Western herbal medicine, valerian is valued for its calming and restorative properties.

Growing Conditions

Valerian grows best in partial shade but can also tolerate full sun in cooler climates. It prefers fertile, moist, nitrogen-rich soil and benefits from regular watering during hot, dry periods.

At KoruKai Herb Farm we apply a generous layer of mulch and use soaker hoses during extended dry weather. A deep weekly watering throughout summer helps plants thrive.

Planting

Plant crowns into a prepared garden bed enriched with compost and well-rotted manure. Space plants approximately 35cm apart and mulch around them well.

Keep the growing tips above the soil line and clear of mulch to prevent rotting. Water thoroughly after planting, then only as needed during dry summer conditions.

Harvesting

For the most potent medicinal roots, harvest in early spring (late July to early August) during the plant’s second or third year, before energy shifts into leaf and flower growth.

At harvest time the roots form thick, fleshy masses resembling linguine pasta. Later-season roots are typically thinner and less potent.

We use a trenching spade to lift the entire root ball for processing.

Processing & Drying

Soil often becomes compacted within the central crown of the rhizomes, so quartering the crown before washing is recommended.

Wash roots thoroughly, chop into smaller pieces, and dry with good airflow at 32–43°C for approximately 3–4 days (longer at lower temperatures). Aim to fully dry within one week to prevent mould.

Properly dried roots should snap cleanly rather than bend. Store in paper packaging in a cool, dry place for up to 2 years, or preserve as a tincture for longer-term storage. Roots can be milled in a food processor before use.

Herbal Preparation*

For internal use. Valerian root may be prepared as a tea (decoction) or tincture.

growing really well

It is growing really well in Ross on the West Coast.

It took off in Spring and despite our pretty cold, wet windy Summer it grew to about 1.5 metres. It looks really healthy. I did take some flower heads off but now plan to let a few grow on to self seed.

The other plants I purchased from you have also grown really well and I am very pleased with their progress. In fact I enjoyed some meadow sweet tea this afternoon.

So thank you for such good quality plants.

Happy plant

My valerian is very happy and I love it! We are North of Auckland, the spring has been pretty typical. Wet, cold, hot, dry, windy! The valerian is withstanding it all. I will try and get a few more plants this year and then after that cut off the flowers.

Doing great

I am in Dunedin and the tallest flower is almost as tall as me (172cm). It seems to like the spot I picked. It gets mostly morning sun there.

Good purchase

The valerian grew really well in the south, we're in Mosgiel in a frost area. The plants were prolific in their first year. They've been flowering since early December. They grew vigorously and self seeded. The new plants are also grewell.
