Oily and congested skin is often prone to blocked pores, which can create an environment where acne-causing bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes) may thrive. While it can be tempting to use strong alcohol-based products or harsh cleansers to “dry out” the skin, these can sometimes disrupt the skin’s natural balance and trigger increased sebum production.
Facial steaming on its own does not “cure” breakouts, but it is a traditional skincare method that helps soften the skin, encourage gentle sweating, and support the natural cleansing process. Warm steam increases circulation, opens pores, and helps loosen trapped oils, dead skin cells, and surface impurities. Sweat itself contains water, minerals, and natural compounds that can help create an environment less favourable to unwanted bacteria.
This Herbal Steam Blend and Toner is formulated with carefully selected herbs traditionally used to support clearer, calmer skin. It can be used as either a facial steam or a gentle herbal toner, depending on your skin’s needs.
NZ native kānuka and kawakawa are especially valued for their natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, making them popular choices in traditional skincare for blemish-prone skin. Combined with calendula and elderflower, this blend helps soothe the skin while supporting a clearer-looking complexion.
A warm herbal steam helps soften the skin and may assist in releasing built-up oil, debris, and impurities from pores, while also delivering aromatic plant compounds to the skin surface.
Each 10g pack is enough for approximately 5 facial steams or 2 litres of toner.
Place 1 heaped tablespoon of herbs into a small pot and add 1 litre of water. Cover with a lid and bring to a gentle simmer. Simmer for 15 minutes to extract the beneficial volatile compounds from the herbs.
Remove from heat, keeping the lid on, and allow the mixture to cool slightly. Ensure the steam is comfortably warm, not too hot.
Place the pot on a stable, heat-safe surface. Sit comfortably and position your face approximately 20–30 cm above the steam. Drape a towel over your head and the pot to trap the steam.
Allow the warm steam to gently bathe your skin for 1–2 minutes at a time, lifting your head periodically to take fresh air. Continue for a total of 5–10 minutes maximum. If it becomes too hot, lift the towel to cool the space.
After steaming, splash your face with cool water to help refresh the skin and gently close the pores. Pat dry.
Place 1 teaspoon of herbs into a small pot with 1 cup of water. Cover and bring to a gentle simmer. Simmer for 15 minutes.
Remove from heat, keep covered, and cool rapidly by placing the pot in a sink of cold water.
Strain the herbs and apply the liquid to clean skin using a cotton pad or soft cloth. This alcohol-free toner is gentle and does not need to be rinsed off.
Store any remaining toner in a clean jar in the refrigerator and use within 7 days.
If you have severe, cystic, or inflamed acne, heat-based treatments such as steaming may aggravate symptoms. Please consult a healthcare professional before use.
If steaming is not suitable for your skin, the cooled herbal infusion can still be used safely as a gentle toner

This is the third time I'am using the facial steam and I'd make a facial toner out of it. It's so gently to my skin and leaves it soft! I'am very happy with this product, I never thought that just herbs has so much power and that there's so much goodness about that!
